Abstract

PURPOSE: To selectively add carbonyl groups to the superficial layer of a sulfonyl group-containing organic polymer without using a special treating agent and complicated treatment, by irradiating the sulfonyl group-containing polymer with ultraviolet rays in the presence of oxygen under specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A carbonyl group-containing organic polymer is produced by irradiating a sulfonyl group-containing organic polymer with ultraviolet rays at a temperature higher than 75°C and lower than the decomposition temperature of the organic polymer in the presence of oxygen. Illustrative of the sulfonyl group-containing organic polymer is a copolymer of a fluorine-containing uvinyl monomer such as tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether sulfonylfluoride. The OH ion permeability of an ion exchanging membrane for salt electrolysis can be controlled by converting the sulfonyl groups of the superficial layer of the membrane into carbonyl groups.
