Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a molded calcined carbon product of uniform quality such as an electrode by adding a small amount of very finely powdered silica to carbonaceous paste.
CONSTITUTION: About 0.1W2.0% very finely powdered silica of about 10W20μ particle size is added to carbonaceous paste contg. coke particles, etc. and mixed to provide thixotropic properties to the paste. This paste is then molded, calcined, and optionally graphitized to manufacture a graphite electrode, a carbon block for a heat and corrosion resistant material, a material for various molds, or the like. Since the viscosity of the paste is not increased during the molding and less binder settles in the calcining process, the quality such as the density of the product is rendered uniform.
