Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a base material for a fiber for optical communication with high dimensional accuracy by heat melting a matrix made of glass or the like, subjecting the molten matrix to size-reducing drawing and stretching, measuring the outside diameter of the matrix at the middle of the size-reducing part and a predetermined point after drawing, and controlling the drawing speed in accordance with the measured values. CONSTITUTION:When matrix 1 to be drawn made of glass, quartz glass, quartz or the like is heat melted with heating source 4 and drawn into a rod or a pipe while being gripped and rotated by chucks 2, 7 which rotate synchronously, the outside diameter of matrix 1 is measured with measuring devices 12, 8 at the middle of size- reduced part 3 and a point close to it after drawing. In accordance with the measured values the drawing speed is controlled through motor 11 for moving chuck 7 to control the outside diameter of the resulting rod or pipe to a predetermined size. Thus, response time to the control is shortened as compared to a conventional method, and glass rod or pipe 5 for an optical fiber is obtd. with high dimensional accuracy.
