Abstract

PURPOSE: The copolymerization of ethylene and an α-olefin is conducted using a catalyst composed of a solid containing magnesium and titanium compounds and of an organoaluminum compound under specific conditions to produce a flexible or semi-rigid copolymer with a specific intrinsic viscosity and a density.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of a catalyst composed of a solid containing an inorganic magnesium solid compound, a titanium compound and/or a vanadium compound and of an organoaluminum compound, the copolymerization of ethylene with 4W250mol%, based on ethylene, of an α-olefin such as butene-1 is conducted in gas phase substantially free from a solvent at a temperature of 10W80°C and a hydrogen concentration of 0W5mol% in the gas phase to produce the objective flexible or semirigid copolymer with an intrinsic viscosity of 3.0W10dl/g, when measured in decalin at 135°C, and a density of 0.850W0.910.
