Abstract
PURPOSE: To purify the titled compound which is a raw material for a permanent waving agent, etc. efficiently, by treating an aqueous solution of a crude thioglycolate containing a dithioglycolate with hydrazine hydrate without causing problems in waste treatment.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of a thioglycolate containing a dithioglycolate is brought into contact with hydrazine hydrate in the presence or absence of an inorganic basic compound to give a thioglycolate of high purity. The dithioglycolate which is an impurity is reduced with the hydrazine hydrate into a thioglycollic acid or a salt thereof. The hydrazine hydrate is converted into inert nitrogen gas and water after the reduction without affecting the quality of the thioglycolate and causing problems as a waste.
