Abstract

PURPOSE: To form an electrically coloring element (display element) having high response speed by using a specified polymer to form an ion conductive material layer.
CONSTITUTION: An α-olefinsulfonic acid polymer having an α-olefin monomer to sulfonic acid residue ratio of 100:(about 0.1W5) is used. Layer 3 of an electrochromic material such as tungsten oxide is placed on transparent electrode layer 1 on glass substrate 5, and a soln. of the above-mentioned polymer is coated onto layer 3 and dried to form ≤10μ thick ion conductive material layer 4' made of the polymer. Opposite electrode 1' is then set on layer 4', and the whole is sealed up in epoxy resin or the like 7 to form an electrically coloring element.
