Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the molten steel containing nickel inexpensively by a method wherein an ore is introduced in a melting furnace along with coke to carry out melt reduction and a nickel oxide is reduced by a waste gas formed during melt reduction.
CONSTITUTION: As initial introducing materials, an iron trash and a stainless steel trash 2, the chromium ore 3 and the reducing coke 4 are introduced into the arc furnace 1 in a layered from and, further, as a slag making agent, quicklime is introduced therein. On the other hand, a container 9 containing the nickel oxide 7 is introduced into a dust collecting duct 6 of the waste gas from the arc furnace 1. Said nickel oxide is pref. particulate. Said introduced materials are melted by applying an arc current. As the arc current is proceeded, a carbon monoxide gas 8 is generated as a reaction product and reduces the nickel oxide 7 in the duct 6 to metal nickel. This nickel is introduced in the arc furnace 1 to form the chromium nickel molten steel. Moreover, if an iron ore is introduced in place of the chromium ore, the molten steel containing nickel is obtained.
