Abstract

PURPOSE: To melt cryolite packed between electrodes safely by supplying an electric current with a prescribed current density to carbonaceous pieces put between the underside of the anode block and the cathode lining when a line of Al electrolytic plants is started.
CONSTITUTION: When an electrolytic cell in an Al electrolytic plant is newly started, carbonaceous pieces 3 are arranged between the underside of the anode blocks 1 and a cathode lining 2, and they are fixed by the dead weight of the block 1. By supplying an electric current with 25W400A/cm2 current density, the pieces 3 are heated until they are made red-hot, and cryolite is packed and melted. After continuing the current supply for a prescribed time, the pieces 3 are removed and the cryolite melting work is finished in safety.
