Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain amino acids with good efficiency and simultaneously recover caustic alkali by electrolyzing an aqueous alkali salt soln. of amino acids by using an electrolytic cell consisting of 3 chambers partitioned by cation exchange membranes.
CONSTITUTION: The anode chamber 2 and an intermediate chamber 3 of an electrolytic cell 1 are partitioned by a strong acidic cation exchange membrane or a cation exchange membrane 5 having strong acidic cation exchange groups on the anode side, and the chamber 3 and a cathode chamber 4 are partitioned by a weak acidic cation exchange membrane or a cation exchange membrane 6 having weak acidic cation exchange membrane on the cathode side. Aqueous soln. of sulfuric acid is supplied to the cathode chamber 4, and an aqueous alkali salt soln. of amino acids is supplied into the chamber 3, and a caustic alkali soln. is supplied to the chamber 4, whereby electrolysis is accomplished. Then, the alkali metal ions in the chamber 3 permeate through the membrane 6 and migrate into the chamber 4, whilist the hydrogen ions in the chamber 2 permeate through the membrane 5 and migrate into the chamber 3. Hence, the alkali salt of the amino acids in the chamber 3 turns to amino acids, and caustic alkali is formed in the chamber 4.
