Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove SO3 as CaCO4 by causing a corona discharge to occur in an exhaust gas, which contains SO3 and is at a high temperature, in the presence of a catalyst containing a calcium compound.
CONSTITUTION: The combustion exhaust gas containing SO3 and being at a high temperature of at least about 300°C is passed through a duct, into which a Ca-containing alkali catalyst F such as fly ash, lime and slaked lime is simultaneously introduced to mix with the gas. The corona discharge 3 is brought about in the gas by applying a high DC voltage between a discharging electrode 1 and a counter electrode 2. A layer of CaO or Ca(OH)2 at the surfaces of the fly ash or that of lime or slaked lime is activated by the corona discharge 3 and reacts with SO3 in the exhaust gas to form CaSO4 which is then removed.
