Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:4-Benzyloxyphenylacetamide expressed by formulaI.
USE: Useful as an intermediate for preparing 4-(2-hydroxy-3-isopropylaminopropoxy)phenylacetamide ("Atenolol ") useful as a β-sympathetic inhibitor, easily convertible into a 4-hydroxyphenylacetamide, and industrially, easily, economically and advantageously obtainable.
PROCESS: 4-Benzyloxyphenylacetonitrile of formula II is reacted with hydrogen peroxide in the absence or presence of a solvent, e.g. ethanol or tetrahydrofuran, in the presence of an acidic catalyst, e.g. hydrogen chloride or sulfuric acid, or in an aqueous solution of an alkali to give the aimed compound of formulaI.
