Abstract

PURPOSE: To carry out the production stably and easily, by adding a monomer and a polymerization initiator at controlled rates to the polymerization system, in producing a styrenesulfonate polymer having a desired MW by varying the amount of a polymerization initiator.
CONSTITUTION: A styrenesulfonate or its mixture with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers (e.g., acrylic acid and acrylamide) is dissolved in water, and this solution is added gradually at a constant rate to the reaction system. At the same time, a polymerization initiator (e.g., sodium persulfate or hydrogen peroxide) in an amount controlled according to the desired MW is added gradually at a constant rate to the polymerization system. The resulting reaction mixture is then reacted. This makes it possible to control the MW of the formed polymer stably. When the polymerization initiator/monomer ratio increase, the MW of the formed polymer decreases.
