Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable switching to a spare semiconductor laser without short break and deterioration of transmission performance, by driving other semiconductor lasers when the deteioration of an existing semiconductor laser is more than the specified amont and replacing the output light gradually. CONSTITUTION:A laser driving circuit 1 which can drive an existing semiconductor laser 2 and/or a spare semiconductor laser 3 is provided in an optical relay device. The output light of the existing and spare semiconductor lasers 2, 3 is inputted to an optical switch 5 via fibers 4a, 4b, and if the deterioration of the laser 2 is more than the specified amount, a control circuit 7 detects the deterioraion to close a switch 8 inserted between the laser drive circuit 1 and the spare laser 3. After the laser 3 reaches a given operating state, a control output is transmitted to the optical switch 5 and control is made so that the total amount of light in a transmission line 6 is almost a fixed value, allowing switching to the spare laser 3.
