Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the crystallization of chill in the thin-walled part of a spheroidal graphite cast iron casting by coating a mixture of a powdery inoculant and a binder dissolved in a solvent on the inside surface of the runners of a mold, and alowing the powder inoculant to dissolve into the molten metal flowing in the runners.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of a powdery inoculant such as ferrosilicon and a binder such as wax dissolved in a methanol solvent is coated on the inside surface of the runners of a mold opposing to the runners of a casting. At the time when molten spheroidal graphite cast iron is charged into this mold, the solvent is evaporated to form the inoculant layer by the binder, thereby allowing the inoculant to dissolve into the molten metal flowing along the surface thereof and preventing chill crystallization. With this method, the inoculant is in a powder from and therefore it stably dissolves into the molten metal, thereby providing inoculation effect. The yield of the inoculant is improved because the inoculant will not remain as undissolved particles.
