Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A 1-(4'-fluorophenyl)-4-alkylpiperidine expressed by formulaI(R is 1W8C alkyl).
EXAMPLE: 1-(4'-Fluorophenyl)-4-methylpiperidine.
USE: A liquid crystal substance for liquid crystal display cells, having the positive dielectric anisotropy, a low viscosity and very quick response. In case R is a straight chain alkyl, the substance is used for electric field effect liquid crystal display elements, e.g. a TN element. In case R is alkyl having an asymmetric carbon atom, the substance is used as a minor additive, having the optical activity and determining the helical direction of the TN element or as a cholesteric liquid crystal material in the phase transfer effect.
PROCESS: A compound expressed by formula II is reacted with a compound expressed by formula III in an inert organic solvent, e.g. benzene or ethyl alcohol, in the presence of a base, e.g. NaOH, under heating to give the compound expressed by formulaI.
