Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect an optical reception level, by providing a logarithmic amplifier outputting a voltage proportional to a logarithm which is a difference between the breakdown voltage of an avalanche photodiode (APD) and a bias voltage. CONSTITUTION:An optical signal is photoelectrically converted and multiplied for electrons at an APD1 and a voltage drop is produced across a resistor 2. This voltage drop is amplified at an amplifier 3 for output and the peak value of the output is detected at a peak detection circuit. A differential amplifier 9 amplifies a difference between the peak voltage and a reference voltage and a voltage amplified at a DC amplifier 10 is a bias voltage of the APD1. The difference between this bias voltge and the breakdown voltage is amplified at a differential amplifier 12 and converted into a logarithm at a logarithmic amplifier 14. When the difference between the output of the amplifier 14 and a prescribed reference voltage is amplified at an amplifier 16, the logarithmic value of the peak of the optical signal can be obtained.
