Abstract
PURPOSE: A phenolic resin that is composed of a polyaddition-condensation product between a cashew-shell liquid of a specific structure and formaldehyde, thus showing good reaction curability and high compatibility and being suitably used as an additive for rubber.
CONSTITUTION: Only a cashew shell liquid of formulaI(R is alkyl that is obtained by adding carboxyls to all or a part of the double bonds in a group of formula II through IV; R1 is H, epoxy; R2 is H, hydroxyl) or a mixture thereof with other phenols is subjected to polyaddition-condensation reaction with formaldehyde at 30W150°C. Then, the product is heated together with 0.02W0.5mol, per mole of the cashew shell liquid derivative, of a polybasic unsaturated carboxylic acid such as maleic anhydride at 70W200°C to effect the reaction.
