Abstract

PURPOSE: To facilitate operation and work and to produce a polymer of stabilized quality, by employing an aqueous protein solution containing a specified benzoic acid (derivative), in polymerizing a vinyl monomer in the presence of a proteinaceous dispersant.
CONSTITUTION: Use is made of an aqueous solution of a proteinaceous dispersant (e.g., hydrolyzate of gelatin, etc., or polycondensate of amino acid) containing, as an antiseptic, about 6.5×10-6W6.6×10-4mol/g of benzoic acid (derivative) represented by the formula, wherein R1 is hydroxyl, a 1W4C alkyl or phenyl, R2 is H, a 1W8C alkyl or phenyl and X is 0W5). Usually, the above aqueous solution is prepared in the form of a high concentration aqueous solution having a proteinaceous dispersant concentration of about 2W10wt%. In use, this solution is appropriately diluted and added to the polymerization system in a proportion of about 0.01W3pts.wt. dispersant to 100pts.wt. vinyl monomer.
