PURPOSE:To obtain a compact image forming optical device which is easy to assemble and divides one line to 2 zigzag lines to form an image or synthesizes 2 zigzag lines into one line to form an image, by providing >=1 lens arrays where plural lens elements are arranged zigzag. CONSTITUTION:A light shielding plate 13 and the first and the second plate- shaped arrays 14 and 15 are arranged in order from an object surface 11 through a zigzag light shielding partition 16 so that respective sides having a radius R2 of curvature face to each other. Each member is held by a frame 20 and is arranged between contact glass 21 provided on the object surface 11 and a solid- state element package array 18 arranged on an image surface 12. When an original is set on the contact glass 21 and is moved in a direction perpendicular to the array, one line of the original 22 irradiated with the slit light of a light source 23 is divided to 2 zigzag lines and is read by the scanning of the solid- state scanning element 18 in the main direction. This device is compact and is easy to assemble.
