To said bridge circuit 1, a bridge circuit 2 having a thyristor 2a is connected through a reactor L. Moreover, said bridge circuit 2 is connected to the same power source ei as the primary winding of the motor IM through a transformer. Thereby, the control of a speed more than a synchronous speed can be performed by making the bridge circuit 1 function as a forward converter at a speed less than the synchronous speed while as a reverse converter at a speed more than the synchronous speed. In addition, employing the gate turnoff thyristor for the bridge circuit 2 permits an excellent speed control.
