Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled polymer having uniform degree of hydrolysis and low agglomeration tendency of polymer particales, by contacting a granular acrylamide polymer with an alkali solution in a specific mixer, and drying the product with hot air.
CONSTITUTION: A polymer gel having a water content of 85W55wt% is obtained by polymerizing an aqueous solution of acrylamide having a monomer concentration of 15W45% in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. potassium persulfate). The polymer gel is granulated, made to contact with an aqueous solution of caustic alkali or alkali carbonate (e.g. caustic soda) in a rotary cylinder or rotary pan mixer having an inner surface made of a synthetic resin (e.g. epoxy resin), and dried with hot air to obtain the objective polymer. The vessel is preferably furnished with baffles to assist the mixing of the particles.
