Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a good cathode of low hydrogen overvoltage for electrolysis of aq. alkali metal salt solns. by forming a microporous metallic plating layer contg. non-conductive fine particles on a fixed pole base and further sintering and coating a cathode active material thereon.
CONSTITUTION: A cathode base consisting of metal, such as iron, of superior electric conductivity, mechanical properties and chemical properties is subjected to descaling, defatting, pickling and etching, after which it is electroplated in a plating bath added with about 1W100g/l non-conductive fine particles of oxide of metals such as Ni or Ti of ≥10Ω-cm2 electric resistance and 0.05W50μ grain sizes. The plating is carried out by plating metals such as Ni by the use of a Watts bath or the like contg. a dispersant such as an anionic surfactant or other additives. After a soln. of a metallic compd. of a cathode active material is further coated on the metallic plating layer, it is heated to sinter and coat the active material. Platinum group metals such as Pt, Pt-Ir or the like are suited for the active material.
