Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a great thickening effect, by adding a small amount of a urethane prepolymer or a masked isocyanate compound to an aqueous resin emulsion.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous resin emulsion is thicknened by adding, to (A) the aqueous emulsion, (B) 0.05W2pts.wt., per 100pts.wt. solids of (A), (a) urethane prepolymer containing at least two -NCO groups, prepared by reacting a polyisocyanate, e.g., ethylene diisocyanate, with a hydrophilic polyol prepolymer or (b) a masked isocyanate compound prepared by reacting component a with a room-temperature dissociating isocyanate masking agent selected from the group consisting of a heterocyclic compound having the skeleton of the formula, hydroxypyridine, hydroxyquinoline and a phenol with a pKa of 5W9.5, in amounts to provide an eq. ratio of the OH groups or NH groups contained in the masking agent to the -NCO groups contained in component a, of 0.05W2.
