Abstract

PURPOSE:To automatically set a reference level and to automatically discriminate whether paper, a liquid, etc. exist or not, by storing a reference level for detection, in a memory, in a copying machine, etc. CONSTITUTION:An analog output of a photodetecting part consisting of a resistance R5 and a photoelectric conversion element OE2 is supplied to an AD converter ADC, and its converted output is stored in a memory ME through a control device CTL. When paper P is inserted and an optical path emitted from a lamp L to OE2 is shut off, a detection output becomes maximum. On the other hand, when the paper P is drawn out and a light beam from the lamp L is made incident to OE2, the detection output becomes minimum. CTL calculates an intermediate value as a reference value from a maximum value and a minimum value of MEM, and this reference value is stored in MEM. In case when paper is detected, whether it exists or not is decided by relation of magnitude between said stored reference value and the detection output.
