PURPOSE:To prevent lowering of the document processing capacity with a small number of patterns, by storing a character pattern for vertical writing or horizontal writing in an external storage device and by reading out and storing the pattern by the form of documents to be drawn up and by performing pattern conversion if the form is opposite to the pattern. CONSTITUTION:A character pattern for vertical writing or horizontal writing is stored in an external storage device 18 such as a floppy disc device, and the character pattern from the device 18 is inputted through gates 13 and 14 to a character pattern generating device 12 incorporating a temporary storage device. A pattern converting device 19 is connected to gates 13 and 14. If the form of documents to be drawn up is vertical writing or horizontal writing and coincides with the character pattern stored in the device 18, the output of a gate 20 is stored in the temporary storage device by a character pattern selecting line 16. If it is opposite to the character pattern stored in the device, pattern conversion is performed in the device 19 by the signal from a pattern selecting line 17, and the output of the gate 20 is stored in the temporary storage device.
