Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve combustion in a main combustion chamber, by making larger the exhaust-valve-side enlarged part of a cotyledon-shaped cavity recessed in the top of a piston for the main combustion chamber than the intake-valve-side enlarged part of the cavity to facilitate the introduction of combution gas into the exhaust- valve-side part of the main combustion chamber.
CONSTITUTION: A cavity 14, which is recessed at a prescribed depth in the top 3a of a piston, comprises a butt portion 14a located under the part 7a of an injection port 7, which is opened into a main combustion chamber 8, and two circular enlarged portions 14b, 14c which extend from the butt portion 14a rightward and leftward, namely, toward an intake valve and an exhaust valve. The nelarged part 14c, which is overlapped with an opening 11 under the exhaust valve, has a larger diameter than the enlarged part 14b, which is overlapped with an opening 13 under the intake valve. Combustion gas ejected out of a swirl chamber 5 can be sufficiently introduced into the openings 13, 11 under the valves and into the exhaust-valve-side portion of the main combustion chamber 8 through the enlarged portions 14b, 14c of the cavity 14 to improve combustion in the main combustion chamber 8.
