Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical memory medium for binary information recording and reproduction with high recording sensitivity and a high SN ratio, by laminating a recording layer, which has the property of sensing irradiated light beams, and a light-absorbable layer, on a light-transmittable substrate. CONSTITUTION:On a light-transmittable substrate 1, a recording layer 3 is provided by vapor-depositing metal, such as Te and Bi, which melts and evaporates thermally by irradiation with a recording beam and reflects a playback light beam. Over this recording beam and reflects a playback light beam. Over this recording layer 3, a light-absorbable layer 14 is provided which melts and evaporates by absorbing the recording light beam. The recording layer 3 and light-absorbable layer 14, when irradiated with the recording light beam via the substrate 1, melt and evaporate thermally to make a pit 15. In irradiation with the playback light beam 7, binary information, when recorded by utilizing the existence of the pit 15, is reproduced by playback light beams 17 and 17' differing in intensity.
