Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an N-alkylalkylenediamine in simple operations in high yield, by adding an aliphatic aldehyde in a solvent to an alkylenediamine slowly under pressure of hydrogen in the presence of a platinum group metal instead of addition in one step.
CONSTITUTION: An alkylenediamine, e.g. ethylenediamine or propylenediamine, is brought into contact with an aliphatic aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde or acetaldehyde, in a rection solvent, e.g. methanol, in the presence of a platinum group catalyst, e.g. Pd, under pressure of hydrogen [2W80kg/cm2 (gauge)] to prepare an N-alkylalkylenediamine. In the process, the aliphatic aldehyde is slowly added to the alkylenediamine.
