Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an anhydrous amino acid crystal with a low residual content of a lower alcohol, by crystallizing and separating an amino acid in the form of a hydrate crystal from a solution of the amino acid containing water and the lower alcohol, and drying the resultant hydrate crystal.
CONSTITUTION: An amino acid, e.g. L-serine or L-proline, is crystallized from a solution of the amino acid containing water and a lower alcohol, e.g. ethanol or n-propanol, as a hydrate crystal, e.g. L-serine monohydrate crystal. The crystallizing method is carried out by cooling the solution, and adding the lower alcohol slowly to the cooled solution in a stable region of the hydrate crystal. The resultant hydrate crystal is then dried under reduced pressure slowly to afford the anhydrous crystal. The lower alcohol is added to a specific amino acid to improve the crystallization rate; however, the crystallized amino acid in the anhydrous form in the final crystallizing step makes the removal of the lower alcohol difficult in the next drying step. In the case of the hydrate, the alcoholic content in the crystal can be reduced to 1/100 by volatilizing the alcohol together with the water of crystallization.
