Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain methylstyrene in high yield economically useful as a raw material for a polymerizable material of a specific use and for a fine chemical product, e.g., agricultural chemical, etc., by subjecting styrene and methanol to catalytic reaction in gas phase in the presence of a zeolite catalyst at specified temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Styrene and methanol are subjected to catalytic reaction in a molar ratio of methanol to styrene preferably 0.5W10 at a temperature condition 200W700°C using zeolite as a catalyst in a flow of a gas of nitrogen, carbon dioxide and/or steam to give methylstyrene in high selectivity. A proton substituted type zeolite, an alkaline earth metal substituted type zeolite, and a rare a earth metal substituted type zeolite are preferable as the zeolite. A proton substituted type zeolite carrying 0.5W45wt% phosphoric anhydride is especially preferable, and a zeolite having a molar ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 2.5W200 and micropore diameters 5W10 Å is further preferable.
