Abstract
PURPOSE:To perform highly accurate recognition in such a way that the propriety of matchings of input patterns of multilevels and each basic pattern is judged, by using binary basic patterns but converting them into a plural number of basic patterns of multilevels. CONSTITUTION:Two sets of picture elements respectively adjoining to a basic pattern f(i,j) stored in advance in an ROM in four directions, upper, lower, left, and right, and respectively extracted by shift register sections SR1-SR3, and they are respectively converted into basic patterns f1-f4 of multilevels by obtaining average values of each direction by averaging processing sections AVR1-AVR4 based on data respectively extracted. Then, convolution operations are performed corresponding to contents of buffer memories BM1-BM4 which store basic patterns f- of multilevels thus converted and a buffer memory BM0 which stores the original basic pattern (f) and contents of another buffer memory BM5 which stores picture information (g) read by sampling objective pictures for every picture element, and matching degrees are detected based on the maximum value.
