Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare easily a steel cutting tool material having excellent wear resistance, by coating the surface of a sintered super hardness alloy having a WC base and containing mainly the carbide of a 4a, 5a or 6a group transition metal with a thin layer of carbide, nitride or oxide of a specific metal. CONSTITUTION:The coating layer of at least one compound selected of among the group of carbide, nitride or oxide of a 4a, 5a or 6a group transition metal, Al2O3 and ZrO2 is formed to a thickness of 0.1-20mu on the surface of a super hardness alloy material having a WC base as a hard material and a composite carbide which is the carbide of at least one metal of 4a, 5a and 6a transition metals and has B-1 type of crystalline structure sintered with an iron group metal such as Co as a binding material. Thus, the amount of a B-1 type hard phase in the surface part of the super hardness alloy component is substantially less than that in the interior of the component so that the toughness of the surface layer is improved and chipping in cutting steel is reduced.
