A nematic liquid crystal A of positive dielectric anisotropy added with a dichromatic die B and an optically active material is filled between two sheets of such nonoriented electrode substrates 11 and 12. When voltage is applied between the electrodes 14 and 15, the voltage applied parts turn colorless and colorless patterns are displayed in a colored background. Thereby, the display device of low threshold voltage, good response and display contrast and low cost is obtained.
