Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a glass waveguide for an optical circuit, which prevents scattering caused by unevenness of the side surface of a core, by lowering a refractive index of the core in the vicinity of a boundary of the core and a clad. CONSTITUTION:A core 2 whose refractive index has been raised is formed by adding, for instance, GeO2 and P2O5 by a proper quantity, onto a quartz glass substrate 1. Subsequently, a refractive index of the core 2 is lowered in the vicinity of a boundary of the core 2 and a clad 3 by volatilizing GeO2 and P2O5 added to core glass by heating them at a high temperature for a prescribed time, or diffusing an additive for lowering the refractive index. As a result, an optical waveguide area is limited to the inside of the boundary of the core 2 and the clad 3, and scattering caused by unevenness of the side surface of the core is prevented.
