Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A Compound of formula I (R1 is H, lower alkanoyl; R2 is lower alkyl; R3 is H, alkyl) and their salts.
EXAMPLE: 2-( 4-Acetyl-1-piperazinyl )-8-ethyl-5,8-dihydro-5-oxopyrido[ 2,3-d ] pyrimidine-6-glyoxylic acid.
USE: Antibiotics and synthetic intermediates of other antibiotics.
PREPARATION: A compound of formula II (R'1 is lower alkanoyl; R4 is lower alyl) is heated in a high-boiling solvent such as biphenyl at 140W260°C to effect cyclization to form a compound of formula III, which is made to react with an alkylating agent to produce a compound of formula IV. Then, selenium dioxide is made to act on the product in a solvent such as pyridine at 60W110°C to give a compound of formula I'. The compound of formula I' can be converted into other compounds of formula I.
