Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce radiating noises associated with vibration of bearing bulks in an internal combustion engine as well as to reduce its weight by a method wherein both sides of the cylinder block are formed into a plain surface so that the transverse section of the block has almost the trapezoidal shape, and reinforcing ribs are provided, and in addition a cover is fitted to the surface. CONSTITUTION:A side section consisting of an external wall section 14 of a water jacket 13 covering a liner section 12 and a skirt section 15 is formed in a plain shape so that a transverse section of a cylinder block 11 has almost a trapezoidal shape. The side section has an integral framework comprised of a top frame 17 attached to an upper deck 16, an intermediate frame 19 attached to a lower deck 18, a bottom frame 21 having an oil pan fitting section 20, a front frame 22 and a rear frame 23, and the reinforcing ribs 24 diagonally arranged in an X shape. Besides, a lightweight cover 26 is attached to the side section via bolt holes, and bearing bulks 25a-25e are formed between frames 19 and 20.
