Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the open-circuit voltage as well as the discharge voltage of an alkaline manganese battery by adding manganese of hexatomic valences to the positive electrode. CONSTITUTION:A positive case 1 is packed with a positive active material 3 made of manganese dioxide, a separator 5, and a liquid holding material 6. A sealing plate 2 is packed with a negative electrode 4 made of an amalgamated zinc. The sealing plate 2 is placed over the positive case 1 with a gasket 7 interposed between the case 1 and the plate 2, and the whole constitutes an alkaline manganese battery. The positive active material 3 of such a battery is made of manganese dioxide containing manganese of hexatomic valences. For instance, KMnO4 is dissolved into 10mol/l aqueous KOH solution, before this solution is heated so as to make a greenish K2MnO4 solution containing manganese dioxide with hexatomic valences to be produced. After that, thus produced solution is added with a commercially available MnO2 and is heated, before the precipitate is washed with water and dried, thus the positive active material 3 being prepared. It is preferable that a semipermeable membrane is used as the separator 5.
