Abstract
PURPOSE:To ensure the easy and accurate positioning for a magnetic head to the travelling tape, by dividing a magnetic tape into two parts on the center line after setting the reference track, recording different control signals at both sides of the tape and then comparing the reproducing levels of those control signals. CONSTITUTION:The reference track on a magnetic tape 11 is divided into the upper and lower parts centering on a center line X, and the signals of frequencies f1 and f2 for example are recorded at the divided parts of the tape 11 respectively. When the tape 11 is set and started, the reproduced signals are extracted out of the reference track via a BPF31 and detected by filter circuits 35a and 35b that permit the passing through of the frequencies f1 and f2 respectively to be compared with each other through a comparator 37. A signal having the level and polarity corresponding to the extent and direction of the shift of a head 18 to the reference track is obtained from the comparator 37. With this signal, a pulse motor 26 is driven and the head 18 is shifted toward the center of the reference track to receive the tracking with the output of the comparator 37 set at 0. In such constitution, a head can be positioned easily and accurately to a travelling tape.
