Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain hexagonal ferrite for a magnetic recording medium with high recording density by mixing a glass forming substance, basic components for ferrite and a substituting component, melting the mixture, cooling melt very rapidly to form an amorphous body, heat treating the body to deposit fine ferrite particles, and removing the glassy substance with dil. acid.
CONSTITUTION: In order to substitute Co or Ti ions for part of Fe ions in magnetoplumbite type Ba ferrite and to use B2O3-BaO as a glass forming substance, Fe2O3, TiO2, B2O3, BaO and CoO are mixed as starting materials, heated, and melted. The melt is cooled very rapidly by spraying on twin rolls rotating a high speed to form an amorphous ribbon. This ribbon is heated to deposit fine Ba ferrite particles, and the glass component is removed to ≤0.3% by immersion in a 20% acetic acid soln. at 80°C. The resulting ferrite is washed and dried to manufacture hexagonal ferrite powder as a magnetic recording medium with high recording density.
