Abstract

PURPOSE:To suppress moire and degradation of the picture quality simultaneously, by recognizing the pattern of an object picture and by controlling dispersion of threshold random numbers in accordance with the recognition result. CONSTITUTION:An input picture signal is stored in a shift register 1 for buffer, and by the output of an integrator 2 for difference absolute value, a random number generator 3 is controlled to lessen dispersion of generated random numbers if the peripheral part including a noticed picture element of an original picture is a line drawing. Further, switching of switches 8 and 10 is controlled in accordance with the output of a quantizer 7, which makes data binary by the output level of the integrator 2, to cut outputs of correcting signal generators 6 and 14 for a character or line drawing part, thus reproducing the original picture faithfully. Next, thresholds generated at random from the generator 3 are given to a quantizer 12 to execute binary conversion of the picture signal with the edge emphasized.
