Abstract

PURPOSE:To make sharp displaying possible by rotating vibration surface and at the same time, allowing the vibration surface of a polarizer to intersect with the long axis of the liquid crystal on the surface of the transparent substrate nearest the polarizer at the time when light passes through tin layers of liquid crystals. CONSTITUTION:The surface of an upper electrode substrate 15, and the lower surface of a lower electrode substrate 16 are rubbed transversely and the upper surface of the substrate 16 and the surface of an electrode substrate 18 are rubbed longitudinally. The liquid crystal molecules and dye molecules sandwiched by the substrates 15, 16 and the substrates 16, 18 are oriented to direct their long axis direction to the transverse directions near the lower side of the substrate 15 and the substrate 16, and are oriented with roughly 90 deg. twists continuously near the upper side of the substrate 16 and the substrate 18. While no electric field is being applied, incident light 21 colors by being absorbed with a liquid crystal layer 19, or is absorbed by a polarizer 20 and therefore the visual field appears colored. When an electric field is applied to a liquid crystal layer 17, the optical rotatory power by the layer 17 disappears and the visual field turns bright, thereby permitting identification of the display from the difference in contrast from the other colored parts.
