Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material for the syhthesis of methyl methacrylate, easily and economically, by contacting an aqueous solution of sodium bisulfite with reaction gas obtained by ammoxydation of isobutylene, etc., thereby separating and removing methacrolein from the gas.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction gas obtained by the ammoxydation reaction of isobutylene or tert-butyl alcohol with NH3 and air, is made to contact with an aqueous solution of sodium bisulfite. Methacrolein existing in the reaction gas can be separated by this process to obtain methacrylonitrile. For example, the reaction gas is introduced through the inlet pipe 2 into the quenching column 1, and made to contact with the mist of sudium bisulfite solution stored in the tank 7 and sprayed from the spray nozzle 3 into the quanching column 1. Methacrolein is separated and collected to the bottom 4 of the column. The remaining gas is recovered through the pipe 5, and purified to obtain the objective material. The reaction is pref. carried out at ≤80°C and 5W9pH.
