Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide the titled device having increased light absorbance of a polychromatic dye, and capable of displaying the sign with distinct color in a high- contrast background, by adding a specific chiral nematic liquid crystal to a nematic crystal, and subjecting the liquid crystal to planar orientation by applying electrical voltage.

The amount of the chiral nematic liquid crystal is pref. the one at which the spiral pitch of the nematic liquid crystal in the planar orientation state becomes less than two-fold of (or pref.nearly equal to) the thickness of the nematic liquid crystal.
