Abstract

PURPOSE: To cool and protect a continuously moving grate by the endothermic reaction of a carbonate compound such as limestone by the thermal decomposition by directly putting the carbonate compound on the grate in the manufacture of reduced pellets by heating and hardening on the grate.
CONSTITUTION: Starting material 6 for reduced pellets is mounted on a continuously moving grate 2 and dried, preheated and sintered in a drying chamber 7, a preheating chamber 8 and a hardening chamber 9 with waste heat from a rotary kiln at 200W400°C, 400W600°C and 900W1,200°C, respectively. At this time, coarse granules 5 of alkaline earth metallic carbonate such as limestone are spread on the grate 2, and the pellet material 6 is mounted on the granules 5. When the carbonate is thermally decomposed, it is converted into alkaline earth metallic oxide such as CaO while releasing CO2. By this endothermic reaction the grate 2 is cooled and prevented from being overheated. The produced CaO is utilized as a desulfurizing agent in the rotary kiln.
