Abstract
PURPOSE:To perform stable operation without degradation in the performance of a cation exchange membrane for a long period of time with low voltage by using the vertical type anode of total round bar and long length as anode in electrolyzing of alkali metal chloride using said exchange membrane. CONSTITUTION:In electrolyzing an aq. alkali metal chloride soln. by using an electrolytic cell divided to an anode chamber and a cathode chamber by a cation exchange membrane, the vertical type round bar anode consisting of disposing round bars of 1-6mm. diameters consisting of titanium or the like coated with ruthenium oxide or the like on a substrate is used as anode. The length of the total round bar which is the total of the length of each piece of the round bars expressed per unit area of the anode is set at >=1.2m/dm<2> and the voids of the round bar anode at <=70%. The electrolysis is carried out by maintaining the internal pressure of the cathode chamber higher by about 0.2-5m water column than the internal pressure of the anode chamber. Thereby, the stable operation is performed with low electrolytic voltage.
