Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare microbial cells included in aluminum alginate, having high physical strength, without inactivating the microbial cells, by treating an aqueous solution or dispersion of microbial cells and an alginic acid salt with a calcium salt and an aluminum salt.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution or dispersion containing microbial cells and sodium, potassium or ammonium alginate is treated with a crosslinking liquid composed of a calcium salt and an aluminum salt. By the difference of reaction rates between the calcium salt and the aluminum salt, the cells are first included and immobilized in calcium alginate, and then the calcium ions in the inclusion are exchanged with aluminum ions to obtain the microbial cells immobilized with aluminum aligated. As an alternative method, an aqueous solution of a calcium salt is added to the above aqueous solution, etc., and then an aqueous solution of an aluminum salt is added thereto.
