Abstract
PURPOSE:To promote transfer to an arc discharge and improve the starting performance by winding three layers of electrode coil around an electrode shaft of a main electrode in a light emission tube such that the first layer is rough while the second and third layers have predetermined coil length. CONSTITUTION:In a metal halide light emission tube encapsulated with mercury, metal halide and starting rare gas, electrode oil 7 is wound in three layers around the electrode shaft 6 of a main electrode provided in said tube. The first layer coil 7a is rough winding, while the coil length L of the second layer coil 7b and the coil length 1 of the third layer coil 7c are arranged to satisfy the relation 0.3<=(l/6L)<= 0.8. With such structure the glow discharge will occur at the top G of the coil 2b and the heat at the top G is prevented from radiating to the electrode shaft 6 and the discharge space by the coils 2a, 2c. Since the temperature rise at the top G is quickened, the transfer to the arc discharge is quickened resulting in the improvement of the starting performance.
