Abstract

PURPOSE: A thickener having excellent storage stability and exhibiting excellent dispersibility when it is added to an unsaturated polyester resin, prepared by mixing a bivalent-metal oxide or a bivalent-metal hydroxide with an unsaturated epoxy ester resin.
CONSTITUTION: 15W60wt% bivalent-metal oxide, bivalent-metal hydroxide or mixture thereof is mixed with 85W40wt% unsaturated epoxy ester resin. As the bivalent-metal hydroxides or oxides, there can be mentioned oxides or hydroxides of magnesium, calcium, zinc or a like metal. Among these, magnesium oxide, iodine value 10W150mg/g, and magnesium hydroxide, iodine value 5W150mg/g, are the most suitable. When the amount of said oxide or hydroxide added is lower than said range, the resulting thickener composition does not exhibit sufficient stability, whereas when it is higher than said range, the resulting thickener composition is too high in viscosity to provide good handleability and operability.
