Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled base material with superior light transmittance, etc. by manufacturing a base material for a rod lens by a vapor axial deposition method using vapor phase starting aterial convertible into quartz glass type oxide by flame hydrolysis and starting material for controlling the refractive index. CONSTITUTION:The 1st vapor phase starting material convertible into quartz type oxide by flame hydrolysis such as SiCl4 and 2nd vapor phase starting material as starting material for a dopant such as GeCl4 are introduced into a burner 2 for an oxyhydrogen flame and hydrolyzed in the flame, and the resulting oxides are deposited on a starting rod 1 made of quartz in the longitudinal direction to form a porous base material 3. This material 3 is sintered by heating to obtain a base material 4 for a rod lens. By introducing the 2nd starting material so that the dopant concn. of the material 3 is changed toward the outside in the radius direction and by controlling the temp. of the deposition face of the material 3 so that the refractive index is reduced toward the outside, the desired base material 4 for a rod lens is obtd.
