Abstract

PURPOSE: An ultraviolet absorber that is composed of fine particles of titanium dioxide of a specific particle size which are coated with a specific amount of an organosilicone on the surface, thus having high selective absorbance of ultraviolet rays with no adverse effect on the transparency of the dispersion medium and being used in packing materials, coating materials and cosmetics.
CONSTITUTION: A fine powder of titanium dioxide almost particles of which have sizes of from 0.01W0.1μ, preferably all the particles come into 0.01W0.5μ is coated with an organosilicone and/or an organotitanium on the surface by 0.1W5%, preferably 0.5W2% on the weight basis of titanium dioxide to produce the objective ultraviolet asborber. The organosilicone is, e.g., a siloxane such as alkylpolysiloxane or a slane coupling agent such as alkyltrimethoxysilane. The organotitanium is, e.g., a titanium coupling agent such as isopropyltri(dioctyl-pyrophosphat)titanate.
